Bromoil Prints
The art of Bromoil is a labor intensive alternative photographic process which started to be used in the late 1890’s. It was most popular in the 1920s when it was used by the Pictorial photography movement to emphasize the texture and move away from straight photographic replication of a scene. It is a unique alternative process art form and is currently practiced by a small number of artists worldwide. A Bromoil image begins with a black and white silver photograph. The photograph is printed on a specialty paper without supercoating and then the silver is removed through a bleaching and tanning chemical process. Permanent lithographic ink is then stippled onto the bleached image with a variety of brushes. The result is an image with rich pigment textures; each image is a one of a kind piece of artwork.
